Mildred Snowman Barter

Mildred E. Barter, 97, died Monday at the Gregory Wing of St. Andrews Hospital. She was born in Newagen, a daughter of Alpheus and Laura Gillman Snowman, and attended schools in West Southport.
Mrs. Barter was a homemaker. She was a member of the Southport Methodist Church, and enjoyed cooking and gardening.
In 1995, she received the Boston Post gold-headed cane as this town’s oldest resident.
Her husband, Lester H. Barter, died in 1971. [At her time of death, surviving were] a daughter, Miriam Pitcher of Saco; a brother, Leland Snowman of Newagen; a sister, Thelma Gamage of Skowhegan; two granddaughters, Maureen Pitcher of Saco and Kathleen Smart of West Buxton, and several great-grandchildren.
Note: Mildred would have received Southport’s cane in 1995 had she still resided in Newagen. Mildred’s mother, Laura Gillman Snowman, received Southport’s Boston Post Cane in 1972.
