Stanley McIntyre Bailey

April 6, 1896 - April 18, 1995

1991 Recipient

Stanley Bailey was born in Hudson, Massachusetts. During the First World War he served as a Radio Operator for the U.S. Navy. After the war, he married Dorothy Spencer in Reading MA and they had three daughters - Dorothy, Grace and Barbara. Stanley built a home on Southport in 1948. He and Dorothy would spend the summers in Maine and Stanley would return to Massachusetts during the week to work.

When his daughters married and had children (11 grandchildren), Stanley built a second cottage so the family could come and spend extended periods of time in Maine. He was always ready for a game of Monopoly with the grandchildren.

As a young man Stanley learned to play the violin and attended the Boston Conservatory and Worcester Conservatory. He played with the Reading Symphony Orchestra for a period of time; becoming the Concert Master in 1941. After he retired he continued to play the violin for his enjoyment  and became involved in a string quartet. He and his good friend Ruth Gardner would drive to Brunswick weekly to play with a group.

He started his swimming pool supply business in Waltham MA and ran it until his retirement in March 1984. Stanley and Dorothy were then able to spend more time at  their summer home in Southport. Dorothy passed away in 1989. Stanley had always wanted to live year round in Maine so he did just that and one of his daughters would stay with him for a month at a time during the winter. Stanley passed away on April 18, 1995, at the age of 97.
