Evelyn "Dox" Crawford Connor Stratton

July 7, 1904 - May 16, 2003

2002 Recipient

Evelyn was born on July 7, 1904, and her parents were Frank Allen Connor and Annie Laura Luther Conner (daughter of Royal and Annie Luther a.k.a. Tige). She grew up and attended school in Greenville, Pennsylvania, and summered on Southport, living adjacent to her Grandparent’s residence, two houses to the right, which is now the home of Robert Mitchell and Susan Endicott. In a family where nicknames were prevalent, she was called Dox.

Evelyn served as a teacher specializing in Household Science or what is now called Home Economics. She married Carl H. Stratton and they had one daughter, Lucy, who passed away at the age of two. She was a talented artist and enjoyed watercolors and ran a block printing business out of the barn attached to her house in the 1950s and 1960s, where she hand cut the printing blocks and made many tablecloths, curtains, and other fabric items that are still utilized in island households to this day.

Evelyn was a bit of an adventurer and traveled to England and Scotland, with her friend, Maude Hawker. She later designed the flower garden in front of her home on Pratt’s Island Road after the beautiful gardens she had seen in Britain.

A historian and writer, Evelyn researched her family genealogy, served as a Trustee for the Hendricks Hill Museum’s, and helped write and edit their Historical Gleanings and Old House Book. She was also great friends with children’s mystery writer, Mary C. Jane.

Her annual Christmas party was legendary with the Thompson, Sherman, and Pratt families, and she hosted them well into her 90s, with amazing home cooked foods and desserts, and good cheer was provided in the kitchen, overseen by her cousin, Earl Pratt. Evelyn’s hospitality was something the entire family looked forward to year after year.

An avid cat lover, Evelyn always had a furry companion by her side. In later years, Big Boy, a Maine Coon Cat ruled the roost at her house. Always a teacher, Evelyn, tutored island children in English, and she formed a wonderful friendship with island resident and artist, Ruth Lepper Gardiner.

Evelyn received the cane at age 98. Her Grandfather Royal Luther III, and two aunts, Louise Froton Luther and Evelyn Luther Pratt, both held the Boston Post Cane prior, and her cousin, Jean Luther Thompson, currently holds the cane. Evelyn passed away at the age of 99.
